Game between Imperial Romans and Gepid


A small bit of rough terrain on table and good lineups. The Romans are on the left, the Exceptionals I believe facing close order Flexible Warband in rough terrain.
Romans are pushing forward aggressively, the Gepids are reorganising.
a very wide Superior Legion facing off 2 Cavalry units.
Beaten up but alive Gepid Cavalry having beaten the entire Roman mounted left wing. Dunce cap required for me. I'll elaborate in the summary.

 The Romans eventually picked off one Gepid Tug. They however lost their army. I will say though that a few Gepid units were a bit worse for wear so I could have picked up more units had I survived.

The dunce cap moment explained: I was too aggressive with my Cavalry. Yes mine were better than Ian's mostly, because of the Armenian ally. The mistake was advancing without proper flank protection. I should have come in at an angle rather than in a straight line.
15-2 to Ian was the final result.

Late Imperial Roman analysis

 My Late Imperial Roman list consists of a Competent CinC, a Talented Sub and a Mediocre Sub. The Competent CinC gives 7 PBS cards and there is only one Scouting card. Personally, considering how tough the Romans are, I don't see them being at a major disadvantage if they're outscouted. As for Tugs, I have an 8 of Exceptional Legionaries with Shield Cover and Impact Weapons. This unit doesn't have the Melee Expert characteristic on the basis that there are very few troops it won't be able to beat in the Impact phase, and also if it breaks off, it only suffers a white KAB test. Then when it returns to combat, it will likely break its opponents if that hasn't happened already. I would deploy these as wide as possible to get the maximum benefit from the Tug. My 2 6s and 1 4 of Superior Legionaries who this time are Melee Experts, basically have the same function as the Exceptionals.  The 4th round of Warfare vs Jason Broomer with Middle Republican Roman. Again it features a deep water secure flank because of the anticipated Numidian ally. A town in Jason's centre placed by me, while he placed 2 gentle hills, the one on his right being of major significance. I sent a unit of Superior and Exceptional Legions to take the large gentle hill. Jason very skilfully maneuvered his Spanish and a 6 of Legions opposite me in such a way that I had to choose to attack him with either 1 Superior base or 1 Exceptional base in combat.  The Averages and 1 Superior Legion are forming a delaying force against the Numidians. I eventually broke the Javelin Short Spear unit in the town with a Superior Legion. This time Caesar woke up and broke the unit a turn earlier than he should (read amazing dice rolls by the Legion.)   First of all, thanks so much to everyone for a wonderful 3rd MeG competition. The venue was  excellent as well in my opinion. I'm going to start with describing my very gimmicky composition, Late Republican Romans. Legendary Professional CinC, Competent Professional Ally, Mediocre Professional Sub. 1 8 of Exceptional Impact Weapon Shield Cover Melee Expert Legions. 4 6s of the same but Superior. 2 8s of the same but Average. 1 4 of Poor of the same but Orb replacing Melee Expert. 1 4 of Cavalry Short Spear Unskilled Javelin. Poor Fortified Camp. My first opponent is Keith Spedding with Early Sassanid Persian. A tough proposition for the first round. I won the PBS phase decisively and forced the terrain into dense with a mountainous or forest secure flank.
